Light Always Overpowers Darkness

by Dr. Larry Ollison, Ph.D.

In 1 John 1:5 the Bible says, “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” That’s a very interesting truth.  God is light.

We know that light travels at the speed of 186,000 miles per second. That’s faster than most people can comprehend.  But let me ask you this.  How fast does darkness travel?  Well, I’ll tell you.  Darkness doesn’t move.  It has no light.  Darkness only exists where there is no light because light always overpowers darkness.

John Chapter 1 says, “In the beginning was the Word,” (referring to Jesus), “and the Word was with God and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the Light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

The Greek word katalambano translated as comprehend could also be translated as overpower.  Then, verse 5 would read like this:  And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overpower it.  Once again, we see that light always overpowers darkness.

Now, with that in mind, look at this verse.  In Matthew 5:14 Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.”  And in verse 16 He said, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.  He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Now listen. If you have problems in your life and it seems as though they are about to get you down, remember what Jesus said in John 8:31 and 32.  He said if we would abide in His Word, we would be His disciples and we would know the truth and the truth would make or set us free.

Well, the truth is this.  God is light and in Him is no darkness.  If you are a born again believer, then Jesus is within you and you are light.  And the great news is this:  Light always overpowers darkness.  Not sometimes, not most of the time, but light always overpowers darkness.

Satan is the prince of darkness.  Jesus has already defeated him.  The Bible even says that Jesus made a public mockery of him and defeated death.  Jesus took authority over darkness and He has given that authority to all who believe.

Remember this today.  If you are a Christian and you are being attacked by darkness, just let your light shine.  Greater is He Who is in you than he that is in the world.  The kingdom of God is within you.

If you are not a Christian and the prince of darkness is attacking you, you only have one hope and that is Jesus.  Accept Him and then you will have the light of God within you. Then you can walk in the light.

Always remember this truth: God is light. According to Jesus, we as Christians are light and light always overpowers darkness.
